There are 6 species of national first class protected birds, 13 species of second class protected birds, and 10 species of national key protected species, which are listed in the list of China's important protected wetlands. China's wetland protection action is a priority protection project, and one of the world's most important 238 ecological areas determined by the world nature foundation.

Because the large area of Honghu Lake can effectively regulate the climate and environment of Jianghan Plain, Honghu Lake is listed as a key wetland protection unit by the state, and also enjoys the reputation of "kidney of central China".
